Devlink Software Platform

DevLink is the core automation software, both developed and used at MBI, that defines a set of communication and command protocols in a standardized architecture. This architecture is simple, flexible, and designed to allow rapid implementation of instrument control applications. Staff at MBI use this during the development of new applications and systems using microchips and other components.

Simple: DevLink is a powerful toolkit and framework for complete laboratory automation. DevLink utilizes a standardized state machine model that uses XML files, scripted code, and standard libraries to describe its devices. A state machine defines operational logic for a hardware component or software service, defines methods that are externally available, and provides details about current state and data—all without compiling code. This allows the advanced user to quickly script logic that defines the protocol and workflow, thereby minimizing the need for custom software development. DevLink’s .NET-based code makes it robust and straightforward to integrate the operation of multiple system modules.

Flexible: DevLink is scalable and adaptable for changes the customer might make after its purchase. With a versatile peer-to-peer mechanism and open model, DevLink can interact easily with other instruments and components already in the customer’s lab. In addition, if the customer later upgrades software components, changes the workflow, or adds additional instruments, DevLink will interface with the new elements—without the need to rewrite software.

Productive: DevLink offers rapid implementation. The sophistication level of the overall system can be tailored to instrument and workflow requirements. Software drivers wrap individual smart components of the system, greatly speeding software development and deployment.

Apollo Operating Software for the Apollo 100 STAR

Microchip Biotechnologies’ first product, the Apollo 100 STAR, will be provided with Apollo operating software that is based on the DevLink platform. Customers preparing DNA sequencing samples will manage the process with an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI).

The Apollo 100 STAR GUI provides you with an easy and intuitive way to tailor sample preparation.

Using the GUI, you can:

  • Identify the samples being processed, and their locations, by importing the file you use with the AB sequence analyzers or by entering data manually
  • Calibrate the position of plates and microchips on the robot
  • Identify the location of reagents in the reagent plates
  • Set up flexible cycling conditions
  • Maintain the chips and do simple  troubleshooting, as needed
  • Commence work by simply clicking on the Start button

That’s all there is to it. With the DevLink platform as the basis of the Apollo operating software, you do not have to write a script, because base scripts are already prepared as part of the product; the GUI simply modifies one of these base scripts.

The GUI also comes with a Progress Monitor, so you can come back to the instrument when time permits to check how your sample preparation is doing and it also includes an extensive log file system that allows you to review prior runs.
